NORFOLK, Va. – ODUSports will periodically provide an update on current and former players that are participating in various leagues throughout the year. This update will highlight current players Justin Hayes, Nate Matheson and Jason McMurray.
Hayes made his summer appearance with the Elmira Pioneers in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. He played in 41 total games as an outfielder, racking up 35 runs, 50 hits, 14 doubles and two triples. He also accumulated 27 RBI and a .314 batting average, which ranked seventh on the team (13th in league). His hit total also ranked third overall, while he topped the team in doubles. Hayes was also dangerous on the base path, as he ranked second on the team (seventh in league) with 16 stolen bases in 18 attempts. Hayes will begin his sophomore campaign with ODU during the 2016 season.
Matheson played with Higgins in the Perfect Game League as a left-handed pitcher for the Elmira Pioneers. He made an appearance in eight games, making seven starts to total 35.1 innings pitched. He posted 28 strikeouts, which ranked sixth on the team. The 6-3 lefty will return to the Baseball Monarchs with one year under his belt and begin his sophomore season in 2016.
McMurray played for the Peninsula Pilots in the Coastal Plains League with teammates Nick Lustrino and Connor Myers. He completed the season hitting .252, starting in 26 games. He accumulated 18 runs and 22 RBI, 27 hits, three triples and two home runs. He was also 8-for-10 in stolen bases. The infielder amassed 65 putouts and a .922 fielding percentage in his 31 games played. McMurray will rejoin the Baseball Monarchs this season as one-of-13 seniors.
