NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 70 Old Dominion men’s tennis team won its final home match of the regular season, 6-1, over Conference-USA opponent Alabama-Birmingham Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The match marked Senior Day for the Monarchs (14-2), who recognized Carlos Lopez Villa, a senior from Madrid, Spain.
“Great day for Carlos,” said head coach Aljosa Piric. “I am happy he was able to get a singles, doubles and team win on Senior Day. He has been such an important part of our team’s growth over the past few years. He has helped put us on the right track, and it’s now up to the rest of his teammates to continue to build and improve our program.”
Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl started the day off with an 8-2 No. 1 doubles victory over Christian Coetzee and Stepan Vancurik. The Monarchs then earned the doubles point as Lopez Villa and Javier Jover Maestre bested Donovan McSeveney and Luiz Felipe Pinto 8-4 at the No. 2 position.
In singles action, Jover Maestre defeated Pinto 6-0, 6-1. The freshman from Petrer, Spain is now 12-3 this season.
Theophile Lanthiez finished soon after with a 6-0, 6-1 No. 5 decision over Henry Paiste. The freshman from Villepreux, France has now won four in a row, five of his last six, and sports an 8-6 record.
Next was Zvonomir Podvinski, playing No. 6 singles, with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Trey McCombs. The junior from Zagrab, Croatia improves to 13-2 on the season and has won eight of his last nine matches.
Lopez Villa, who was recognized on what was Senior Day for the team, bested Mitchell Martell 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1 singles action. Ranked No. 102 nationally, Lopez Villa has a 13-2 record and is 51-4 over the past three seasons.
Adam Moundir defeated Vancurik in their No. 3 singles (6-3, 5-0). Moundir is now 11-4 in singles play and has won six of his last seven matches.
“This was a great team win against a conference team,” continued Piric, “and we are all looking forward to finishing our season next weekend at William & Mary and Radford, and then finally compete for the C-USA title here at home in a couple of weeks.”
