NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s tennis team received five different awards, as the 2015 Conference USA postseason achievements were announced on Thursday. Carlos Lopez Villa earned All Conference USA First Team Singles honors, while Adam Moundir was named Freshman of the Year and was placed on the All Conference Second Team for singles. Lopez Villa and Moundir each made All-Conference USA Second Team for Doubles with their respective partners.
Unlike the women’s side for Conference USA awards, the men’s side only announced two singles teams of six and two doubles teams of three, as well as Player, Freshman, Newcomer and Coach of the Year recognitions.
Lopez Villa, the lone senior and captain for ODU, started the season out on a 12-match winning streak and finished the season 15-3. He compiled an 53-5 record the past three seasons. Twelve of Carlos’ 15 wins this season came in straight sets, while taking down multiple nationally ranked opponents. At one point this season, Lopez Villa was ranked as high as No. 43, which is when he downed No. 42 Tomas Stillman of UTSA in straight sets. The Madrid, Spain-native raked in three Conference USA Player of the Week awards. Lopez Villa also made his third straight appearance on the C-USA All Academic Team, holding a 3.78 GPA as a double-major in finance and economics. He Went 5-1 in conference play and was undefeated against C-USA opponents in the regular season.
Adam Moundir played the No. 2 spot as a true freshman for Old Dominion this season, compiling a 13-4 record. Adam won his first four, as well as his last four matches at the collegiate level this spring. Moundir went on three different four-match winning streaks this year. At one point this season, he won eight of nine matches. Adam won via straight sets in eight of his 13 wins this year. On April 7, Moundir was named C-USA Athlete of the Week. He Went a perfect 5-0 against Conference USA opponents.
Lopez Villa and teammate Javier Jover Maestre tag-teamed to make All C-USA Second Team for doubles. The senior and a freshman from went 8-1 in doubles play for the season. The two didn’t allow more than four games in seven of their eight victories. Lopez Villa and Jover Maestre went a perfect 4-0 against Conference USA opponents, beating UTSA (8-2), UAB (8-4), Middle Tennessee (6-4) and FAU (8-3). The two Madrid, Spain natives started the season on a four match winning streak, as well as ended the year on a four match winning streak.
Also making Second Team for doubles were Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl. The two true freshmen teamed up to make an outstanding No. 1 doubles team for Old Dominion, as they went 13-6 on the season. The duo didn’t allow more than four games in any of their 13 wins, including their 8-4 doubles win over No. 72 ranked Daniel Leitner/Gerhard Gruindelingh, which led to ODU defeating No. 66 South Alabama via a 4-3 score. ODU’s No. 1 doubles team went 5-2 against Conference USA competition this season. At one point this year, Moundir and Weindl got on a five match winning streak and claimed victory in 10 of 12 matches.
