Mathews Wins 200 Fly on Final Night of C-USA Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Reed Mathews won the 200 fly in an NCAA B-Cut qualifying time while Carol Withus was named the C-USA Men’s Coach of the Year and Noah Scully was named Conference USA Women’s Diving Coach of the Year Saturday night in Knoxville on the final day of the C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Lady Monarchs finished seventh overall with 294 points while the men’s team finished in second with 894 points, just 15.5 points behind Western Kentucky.  FIU won the women’s championship with a score of 765 points.

Mathews won the 200 fly in 1:44.65 for his second NCAA B-Cut time of the weekend as he qualified in the 100 fly a night earlier.

Yesim Giresunlu got Saturday night’s session under way for the Monarchs in the 1650 free with a fifth place finish in a time of 16:48.07.

Bernardo Figueiredo recorded a second place finish on the men’s side with a time of 15:41.52.

Rachel Eckert scored a third place on the platform dive with a 192.90 to go along with a pair of first place finishes in the 1 and 3-meter dives.

Anton Mikaelsson took second place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:46.47 while Jacob Zeidler added a second place in the 100 free with Vitor Sa taking third place.

In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Julia Vido earned a fifth place finish with a time of 2:15.68.

Eddie Hubert captured third in the men’s 200 breaststroke in a time of 1:57.89.

Cory Moreno came in second in the men’s platform dive with a score of 240.35.

The women’s 400 freestyle relay team of Sofie Sjoberg, Savannah Bowers, Stephanie Norris and Morgan Johnson finished in fifth with a time of 3:25.61.

The meet capped with the men’s 400 free relay with the Monarchs taking second, just .24 behind Florida Atlantic.  Jacob Zeidler, Carter Watson, Eddie Hubert and Vitor Sa finished with a time of 2:59.71.
