ODU Comes From Behind With 10 Players to Claim 2-1 (2 OT) Victory

NORFOLK, Va. – After six consecutive road games, the Old Dominion University women’s soccer team (3-6-2, 2-1-0) returned home to take on Western Kentucky (6-3-0, 1-1-0) on Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex, in a game that the Lady Monarchs would come from behind with a man-down to conquer a 2-1 victory over the Hilltoppers.

In the 35th minute of play, Western Kentucky’s Kelly Phipps centered the ball into ODU’s box, only to find Lauren Moats, who beat Lady Monarch goalkeeper Erin Kinz to the pass and poked the ball in from just a couple yards out giving the Hilltoppers a 1-0 advantage. Moats leads WKU in points with eleven and goals with five so far this season.

Despite trailing 1-0 at the half, ODU led the shot count, 5-2, and took the only two corners of the first 45 minutes. 

In the 51st minute, ODU keeper Erin Kinz was given a red card, forcing the Lady Monarchs to play a player down for the rest of the match.

Moments later in the 58th minute, Taylor Smith found Grace Haverly, who found the back of the net to nod the score at 1-1. The goal was Haverly’s second of the season.

The two teams stayed tied at 1-1 to force overtime. This was Old Dominion’s sixth match which entailed overtime this season.

After the first overtime came and went with the score still level, it was Old Dominion’s Devin Dougherty who found Madison Hogan off a corner kick to lift the Lady Monarchs to a 2-1 victory while playing a man-down.

Before tonight, Western Kentucky was only allowing 0.62 goals per game on average.

For the match, ODU dominated the shot count (20-8), as well as the corner kick count (8-2).

ODU’s Meredith Lenox collected three saves in 51 minutes of work, while WKU GK, Allison Leone tallied eight saves in the losing effort.

Jessie Klamut led all shot takers with six on the night.

NEXT UP FOR THE LADY MONARCHS
Old Dominion will remain at home for a match Sunday against Marshall at 1:00 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.

Sunday’s match will mark ODU’s Breast Cancer Awareness game, in which the Lady Monarchs will wear pink jerseys.

The Thundering Herd will enter this weekend’s contest with a 3-4-2 overall record and a 0-1-0 mark in C-USA play. Marshall will take on Charlotte in Charlotte this Friday before making the trip to Norfolk for Sunday’s contest. Earlier this season, Marshall played VCU to a 3-3 tie.

Kristine Culicerto leads Marshall with 11 points on five goals, while teammate Erin Simmons has tallied seven points off three goals.

Goalkeeper Lizzie Kish has played all 847 minutes protecting the net for the Thundering Herd, while allowing an average of 1.49 goals per game and collecting a total of 20 saves in the process.

Marshall was picked to finish seventh in the Conference USA Preseason Poll.
