No. 18 Lady Monarchs Cruise to 8-0 Victory Over Villanova

NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 18 Old Dominion field hockey team cruised to an 8-0 victory over Villanova in their BIG EAST opener on Friday afternoon. The Lady Monarchs extend their win streak to five games and are currently 6-4 on the year.

ODU set the tone of the game early, scoring the first goal just 35 seconds into the match. Senior forward Katy Fuhrman (Columbia, Pa.) netted the goal, marking her fifth of the season.

The Lady Monarchs continued to attack the Wildcats, racking up a staggering 18 more shots over the rest of the half. They also tacked on three more goals, led by senior forward Rosario Villagra (Salta, Argentina) who scored twice and assisted the third goal. Sophomore forward Alyssa Jones (Stroudsburg, Pa.) notched the other goal for ODU, while junior midfielder Sarah Breen (Melbourne, Australia) assisted one of Villagra’s goals.

The second half proved to be just as one-sided as the first, as the Lady Monarchs recorded another four goals with four different players scoring for ODU. Breen, Fuhrman, sophomore forward Casey Dolan (Forty Fort, Pa.) and freshman forward Danielle Grega (Kingston, Pa.) each notched a tally for ODU. Villagra picked up two more assists, while seniors Kelsey Smither (Suffolk, Va.) and Nicole Goff (Collegeville, Pa.) each had one apiece.

ODU dominated the shot charts, racking up a 28-2 advantage, including an 18-2 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Monarchs also held a 13-2 lead in penalty corners.

Junior Megan Hept (Chesapeake, Va.) played the entire game in goal for the Lady Monarchs, finishing with two saves. This marks her third shutout of the season. Jordyn Clipstone and Kristina Roberts spit time in goal for the Wildcats. Clipstone suffered the loss and made eight saves and Roberts finished the game with two stops.

Villagra paced the offense with seven points on the day off of two goals and three assists. She leads the team with 22 points on the season, recording six goals and 10 assists on the year.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they travel to College Park, Md. to take on the second-ranked Terrapins at 2:00 p.m. Fans can watch the game on BTN online or follow live stats.
