RICHMOND, VA—Sidney Rivera and Christian Schroeer each scored second half goals to help the Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs (4-3) to a 2-1 victory over VCU (3-5-1) Friday night at Sportsbackers Stadium before a crowd of 1,156.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie through halftime, but the Monarchs got on the board after a VCU foul in the box. ODU senior Sidney Rivera made the penalty kick to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half.
ODU added a second goal with 19 minutes left in the match when Christian Schroeer scored on a pass from junior Josue Henriquez. VCU made it 2-1 eight minutes later on a goal from Ritchie Duffie, but could not get the equalizer.
VCU outshot the Monarchs 12-7, but red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen came up with four saves.
The Monarchs begin Conference USA play next week, Oct. 3 in Lexington, KY against the University of Kentucky.
