NORFOLK, Va. – Taylor Heinicke threw three touchdown passes to lead the White Team to a 21-14 victory in the annual Old Dominion University Spring Game Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium.

The Spring Game was just a part of an exciting day on ODU’s campus, starting with the first-ever Big Blue 5K that was followed by the Big Blue BBQ.

Heinicke started the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Larry Pinkard to put the White Team on team 7-0.

Both defense played well, allowing just the one first half score.  Heinicke, David Washington and Colin McElroy were under pressure most of the day, as Andrew Everett had two sacks and Scott Wiggins ended up with one.

The White Team made it 14-0 when Heinicke connected with Melvin Vaughn for an acrobatic 25-yard touchdown reception, as Vaughn leaped over a defender to pull down the catch.

David Washington pulled the score to 14-7 when he hit Nick England with a five-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter but Heinicke and the White Team responded with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Zach Pascal to take a 21-7 lead.

The Blue Team cut the deficit to 21-14 when Washington threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Keshawn Henderson.

The Blue Team got the ball back for one last possession, but Washington’s final pass in the end zone intended for Jusse Yorke was batted away by the defense to preserve the White Team’s win.

Notes
ODU Head Coach Bobby Wilder announced today that his captains for the 2014 seasons will be Taylor Heinicke, Eriq Lewis, Andre Simmons, Josh Mann and Antonio Vaughan.  It will be the third-straight season that Heinicke will be a team captain and the second-straight for Simmons.  Lewis, Mann and Vaughan are first-time captains ... ODU had seven early enrollees this January and they made quite an impression on Saturday ... Jusse Yorke, a wide receiver from ASA College caught four passes for 20 yards while Reece Schmidt was the day's second-leading tackler with six and Martez Simpson was third with five ... Sophomore wideout Nick England sat out last season after transferring from FIU and caught three passes for 19-yards and a touchdown.
