WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Old Dominion University women’s tennis team took down the Hoyas of Georgetown University by a score of 4-2 on Friday afternoon in the nation’s capital city. Two seasons ago, the Lady Monarchs hosted the Hoyas and lost 5-2, so ODU was able to avenge that loss in a big way today.
“This was a great team effort by all of our ladies, as well as staff today,” remarked Old Dominion head coach Dominic Manilla. “I am really happy with the way we performed. This team is looking forward to getting back home and competing in the C-USA Tournament next week.”
Due to the threat of rain, both head coaches agreed on starting with single’s play.
This week’s Conference USA Player of the Week, Nikol Hristova, was able to do what she does so well on Friday and that is to win. Despite falling in the first set 3-6, Hristova proved her resiliency and mental toughness by pulling out the second and third sets: 6-3, 6-1. Hristova now advances to 12-4 on the season, with all 16 results coming at the No. 1 slot for the Lady Monarchs.
Marijana Novakovic handled business in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) and even got stronger as the match when got on, as she didn’t allow a single point in her second set. With the win, ‘MJ’ is now 7-5 at the No. 3 slot for Old Dominion as a true freshman.
Ivana Vukovic performed brilliantly for ODU at the No. 4 spot, winning her first set in tiebreaking fashion and then sealing the victory with a 6-3 second set win.
Old Dominion senior, Melissa Esnal Olguin was too much for Georgetown’s Sophie Panarese, as Esnal Olguin won in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to advance her overall single’s record to an impressive 10-4 on the season.
With the win, Old Dominion finishes the regular season with an 11-6 record, while going 8-3 at home.
