RICHMOND, VA—Old Dominion University sophomore  centerfielder Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) knocked in three runs and senior righthander Brad Gero (Lake Worth, Fl.) picked up his second straight save to lead the Monarchs (3-2) to a 6-4 victory over VCU (3-1) at the Diamond Wednesday for their third straight win.

Myers doubled home sophomore second basemen P.J.Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) and senior shortstop Tyler Urps (Wilton, CA.) in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie.  He also knocked in Urps in the fifth inning.

Junior Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, IA.) singled home Myers in the seventh inning to tie the game at three, while junior leftfielder Josh Eldridge brought home senior designated hitter Ben Slaton (Magnolia, MS.) in the second inning.

Brad Gero came on in the eighth to get the third out in that inning and then pitched the ninth to get his second straight save in as many days. Freshman Sam Sinnen (Virginia Beach, VA.) got his first collegiate win with 2.1 innings of relief. Monarch starter Victor Diaz (Perth Amboy, NJ.) pitched five scoreless innings giving up just three hits and striking out one. 

Myers, Slaton and Urps each had two hits on the day as the Monarchs pounded out 12 hits for the second straight day.

The two teams will meet again on March 26th in Hampton’s War Memorial Stadium for the second annual Key Dog Classic.

The Monarchs return for their home opener Friday at 4 p.m. in game two of the ODU Baseball Invitational against St. John’s following the Kentucky-Saint Joseph’s contest at 12 noon. The three-day tournament will be held at the ODU Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
