NORFOLK, VA—Old Dominion University sophomore guard Aaron Bacote scored a team high 13 points and red-shirt junior guard Dimitri Batten added 10, but the Monarchs lost to the College of Charleston Wednesday night, 51-44 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. C of C improves to 5-6, while the Monarchs drop to 4-7.
The Cougars led by as many as nine, 27-18 with 19:29 left in the game, but the Monarchs clawed their way to within one, 33-32 at 9:03 mark after a Bacote three-pointer and to witin two points, 39-37 with 3:54 left after a Bacote driving layup.
College of Charleston got a three-pointer from Anthony Stitt to make it 42-37, and then ODU’s Batten’s layup cut it two three again at 42-39. Anthony Thomas follow upped the score to 44-39 with 1:25 left, but Monarch freshman forward Denzell Taylor hit a shot in the lane to make it 44-41 with 1:15 remaining.
Canyon Barry (Son of NBA great Rick Barry) hit a three-pointer to put the Cougars up six at 47-41 with 41 seconds left, followed by two free throws from Adjehi Baru which pushed their lead to 49-41 with 27 seconds left. Taylor would score again, but Joe Chealey knocked down two more free throws for C of C to make it 51-43 with 15 seconds left. ODU got a free throw from Keenan Palmore to finish the scoring at 51-44 and gave the Monarchs their sixth loss in a row.
The Monarchs shot .314 (16-51) from the floor, while College of Charleston was .370 (17-46). ODU outrebounded the Cougars 38-33, including 17 offensive rebounds. Taylor led the game with eight rebounds, followed by Richard Ross with seven.
Sophomore Keenan Palmore scored ning points on the night, followed by Denzell Taylor with seven and Richard Ross with five.
C of C hit four three-pointers and ODU one, and the Cougars were 13-of-14 from the free throw line to the Monarchs 11-of-19.
Willis Hall led C of C with 14 points and seven rebounds, followed by Anthony Thomas with 10 points.
C of C also blocked nine Monarch shots led by Adjehi baru with four and David Wishon with three. Richard Ross swatted four shots for ODU.
ODU returns to action Saturday afternoon at Former CAA rival UNC Wilmington in Trask Coliseum at 2 p.m.
