LEXINGTON, VA--ODU senior designated hitter Austin McGowan and freshman second baseman P.J. Higgins each had three hits to help lead the Monarchs to an 11-5 victory over the Keydets of VMI Wednesday afternoon. ODU improves to 3-3 on the season, while VMI falls to 3-6.
With the score tied at 1-1 after two innings, Higgins led off the third inning with his first collegiate homerun as ODU exploded for 10 runs in the inning. Higgins, junior firstbaseman Joey Burney and sophomore leftfielder Josh Eldridge knocked in two runs each in the inning.
The Monarchs pounded out 13 hits in the game. Besides McGowan and Higgins, Eldridgehad two hits on the day, while freshman outfielder Connor Myers, McGowan and Higgins each scored twice.
Senior righthander Erick Baker picked up the win in relief, as ODU used five pitchers on the day.
The Monarchs return to action this weekend with a three-game series against Temple beginning Friday at 3 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
