Old Dominion Battles Past Northeastern in Emotionally Charged Game, 70-67

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team persevered late over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon, 70-67, in an emotionally charged atmosphere in the 11th annual Hoops for the Cure game at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Old Dominion (17-9, 8-6) snapped their three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion as a back-and-forth affair was pulled out late by the Lady Monarchs, who had an eight-point lead with just over five minutes to play, before Northeastern (13-10, 6-6) went on a 9-0 run to take a 66-65 lead with 1:34 remaining.

Freshman Jackie Cook's 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists along with sophomore Shae Kelley who scored 19 points and added nine rebounds, five steals, two assists and a block.

NU was led by Jewel Tunstull's double-double as she scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds while Cannon added 20 points and Kerkhof had 13. The Huskies were able to overcome a hot start by ODU to take a halftime lead of 34-33 while taking advantage in the paint, 38-24. Cannon hit all five of NU's three-pointers, who averaged a league-best 8.3 per contest coming in.

ODU had four players in double figures for the first time all season as redshirt senior Mairi Buchan added 13 points and six rebounds along with three steals and Minor had 10 points and four rebounds. Cook, Buchan and Minor all hit a pair of three-pointers as ODU drained eights shots from behind the arc. The Lady Monarch bench outscored the Huskies, 23-8 and out rebounded NU, 37-32.

Old Dominion continues their three-game homestand on Thursday when they host William and Mary at 7 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center as part of the Optima Health Challenge. Thursday will also be `Barefootin' Night' where all fans are encouraged to wear open toed shoes and bring a pair of used athletic shoes to the game to donate to Samaritan's Feet for those in need.
