NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball team travels to the peninsula on Sunday to take on rival William & Mary at 2 p.m. at Kaplan Arena as part of the annual Optima Health Challenge.
OPTIMA HEALTH CHALLENGE
Sponsored by Hampton Roads based Optima Health, the trophy will be presented annually to the school which accumulates the most points in head-to-head competitions in all sports. ODU won the inaugural challenge last year.
During this year, the CAA foes will face off 15 times, with each event being worth 10 points. The Monarchs and Tribe will compete head-to-head in football, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, field hockey, baseball and women’s lacrosse. The winner will be the first school to reach 75 points. William and Mary currently leads ODU this season, 25-20.
FACING ADVERSITY
Old Dominion improved to 5-0 this season coming off a loss when they defeated Georgia State on Thursday, 68-45. The Lady Monarchs have also been solid away from home this season with a 5-1 record.
FREE THROW LINE
ODU has been hot from the free throw line since CAA play has started. In half of their league games, the Lady Monarchs have shot over 80% from the chairty stripe including a season high 84.6% from the line at UNCW on Jan. 17. In five of their six CAA games this season, ODU is 71% or better from the free throw line. Overall in CAA action this season, ODU is shooting 75.8% (91-120).
BENCH HELP
The Lady Monarchs continue to utilize their bench having outscored the opposition 479-238 in bench points this season. 40 percent of ODU’s season point total has come from their bench compared to just 24 percent from the opposition. In CAA play, the ODU bench is outscoring the opposing bench, 190-57.
ODU has had more bench points in 14 of their 18 games this season.
CAA ROOKIE AWARDS
With LaQuanda Younger picking up her second CAA Rookie of the Week honors this season on Monday, that marks the eighth time since the beginning of the 2011-12 season that an ODU player has recieved this award. Last season, Ashley Betz-White, the CAA Rookie of the Year, was honored four times while freshman Galaisha Goodhope earned the honor on Jan. 7 this season.
LaQuanda Younger NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
LaQuanda Younger was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season it was announced by the league office on Jan. 21.
Younger recorded career-highs in points in back-to-back games last week as she drilled eight three-pointers in two road contests at UNC Wilmington (1/17) and Hofstra (1/20).
In Thursday’s win over the Seahawks, thre freshman guard was ODU’s leading scorer as she connected on four three-pointers in the first half to lead the team with 12 points. On Sunday, she drained four field goals from behind the arc and scored 14 total points. She was 8-for-11 (.727) from three-point range during the week, scoring 26 total points to go along with a pair of rebounds and a steal in 41 combined minutes of action.
SERIES HISTORY
Sunday’s meeting will be the 57th meeting between Old Dominion and William and Mary. The Lady Monarchs lead the all-time series, 52-4. The Tribe snapped a 50-game losing streak to ODU last season in Williamsburg with an 83-80 victory. It was their first win in the series since the 1975-76 season.
SCOUTING THE TRIBE
The Tribe earned their first win in league play on Thursday night with a 59-50 win over Towson in Williamsburg. The victory snapped an 11-game losing streak dating back to Nov. 24. William and Mary is 3-14 overall and 1-5 in the CAA this season.
Seniors Emily Correal and Janine Aldridge power the Tribe line-up as Correal is one of the league’s top scorers at 16.2 points per contest to go with 8.4 rebounds per game. Aldridge adds 13.5 points per game along with 45 assists, 44 steals and 54 three-pointers.
Head Coach Debbie Taylor is in her 14th year at the helm of the William and Mary program. The Tribe return 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad. Seniors Emily Correal and Janine Aldridge lead a five-member senior class this year. Correal, who earned preseason All-CAA accolades, averaged 13.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per outing from last season, while Aldridge has drained 221 career 3-pointers, a school-record, which included a W&M single-season record of 92 last season.
In a vote of the league’s head coaches, William and Mary was picked to finish in a tie for ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe finished 10-20 overall last season and 3-15 in the CAA.
LAST TIME OUT
ODU clamped down defensively against Georgia State on Jan. 24 in a 68-45 victory at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Panthers shot just 24.1 percent from the field, the lowest by any ODU opponent this season as they went 13-for-54 from the field. GSU went a stretch of 13:54 spanning midway in the first half and into the second half without registering a field goal.
Jackie Cook who poured in a game-high 15 points, three steals, two rebound and an assist. Cook also passed 400 career rebounds on Thursday night.
Michelle Brandao racked up a career-best eight assists off the bench along with two rebounds, two points, a block and a steal. The eight assists are the most in a game by any ODU player this season. Tiffany Minor matched her career-high with 10 points while adding five rebounds and three steals. The Lady Monarchs held a 35-20 advantage in the paint and the ODU bench outscored GSU, 30-9.

ATOP THE CAA IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION
Old Dominion finished tied for the best non-conference record in the league at 9-3 along with Delaware.
Both the nine non-conference wins and the 9-3 start are bests for ODU since the 2007- 08 season when they went to the Sweet 16 with a record of 31-5.
BAREFOOT PRINTS
ODU head coach Karen Barefoot enters her 14th year as a head coach in 2012-13 and 200 plus wins in her career as she leads the Lady Monarch program in year two. As head coach at the Apprentice School in 2001, she led the Builders to a National Championship in the school's first ever women's sport while taking Lenoir-Rhyne the NCAA Tournament in the 2002-03 season. In 2010-11 while at Elon, she led the Phoenix to the WBI, the schools first ever women's basketball tournament appearance. The last time that ODU made the NCAA Tournament was in 2008 when Barefoot was an assistant coach for the Lady Monarchs and helped them make the Sweet 16.
KAREN BAREFOOT SHOW
The Karen Barefoot Coach's Shows continue to pack the house at YNot Pizza in the Village behind the Ted. Joined by host Doug Ripley, Barefoot reviews the previous week's game and gives insight into the upcoming Lady Monarch matchups all season long. The next show is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 29th at 6 p.m.
LADY MONARCHS INK TWO
Coach Barefoot announced the addition of Odegua Oigbokie and Destinee Young who signed letters of intent to play for the Lady Monarchs next fall on Nov. 14.
Oigbokie is a highly touted forward from Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., while Young is a power forward out of Hoffman Estates High School in Hoffmann Estates, Ill.
Oigbokie, who is 6-foot-1, averaged 18 points and eight rebounds as a junior and has been named all-district and all-region for Ridgeway the past two seasons. Young, who is also 6-foot-1, averaged 15.4 points and 11 rebounds as a junior at Hoffman Estates High School, where she already is the record holder for career rebounds and single-season blocks.
Out of the five recruits that second-year head coach Karen Barefoot has landed at ODU, four have been rated as three stars or better by ESPN. The other three were local freshmen guards Galaisha Goodhope out of Norfolk and LaQuanda Younger of Newport News and forward Chelisa Painter from Chesapeake who is sitting out this season after transferring from George Washington.
NEWCOMERS
Head Coach Karen Barefoot added three freshmen this season in local talented guards Galaisha Goodhope and LaQuanda Younger along with center Brittany Martin out of the New York. Transferring in are forward Shae Kelley and Miami (FL) transfer guard Stephanie Gardner. The incoming class is ranked the best in the CAA and No. 42 in the country overall.
