Norfolk, Va.- Taylor Heinicke broke the single-game NCAA FCS Playoff record for total offense with 542 yards as No. 4 seed Old Dominion defeated Coastal Carolina 63-35 in the second round of the FCS Playoffs.
Heinicke threw for 497 yards and tied a playoff record with six touchdown passes, three to Larry Pinkard who recorded a career-high 154 yards receiving on six catches.
Old Dominion (11-1) advances to the third round where they will host No. 5 seed Georgia Southern. The time and date have yet to be determined.
Heinicke broke Todd Hammel's (Stephen F. Austin) record of 539 yards of total offense that he set in 1989 against Grambling. Heinicke was 32-of-44 passing for 497 yards and six TD's and also added 45 yards on the ground.
The Monarchs took a huge surge of momentum into halftime as the Monarch defense stopped Coastal from on the one-yard line three times in the final minute, the final time Chris Burnette forced and recovered a Marcus Whitener fumble at the one as ODU took a 28-21 halftime lead.
ODU came out of the break and drove 69 yards in six plays as Heinicke hit Pinkard for a 50-yard pass to increase the lead to 35-21.
Coastal came back to tie the score as Aramis Hillary hit DeMario Bennett for an 11-yard score and after an ODU fumble the Chanticleers tied the score as Travis Small ran from 18-yards out.
That was the final time CCU got on the board, as ODU tallied the final 28 points of the night. It started with a six-yard TD pass to Pinkard to put ODU on top 42-35. The drive was highlighted by a 39-yard pass from Heinicke to Mayers.
After the Monarchs forced a Coastal punt, Heinicke hit Pinkard down the middle of the field on the first play of the fourth quarter for 73 yards to give ODU a 49-35 advantage.
Alex Arain came up with 1.5 sacks on the next Coastal drive as CCU turned it over on downs and the Monarch offense put the finished touches on the game with a 50-yard drive as Heinicke hit Mayers from 13 yards out for his sixth TD pass of the night.
Colby Goodwyn added a five yard run to make the final score 63-35.
Aramis Hillary ran in from three yards out to put Coastal on the board first, capping a 71-yard drive highlighted by a Jeremy Height 28-yard run and 29-yard completion from Hillary to Matt Hazel.
The Monarchs struck right back as Taylor Heinicke connected with Blair Roberts on fourth and one for a two-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at seven.
Reggie Owens intercepted Hillary on fourth and one at the ODU eight yard line. The Monarchs responded by going 92-yards in 14 plays capped off with a six-yard run by Heinicke to give ODU a 14-7 lead.
ODU intercepted Hillary for the second-straight series as Craig Wilkins picked off Hillary on a pass over the middle. The Monarchs went 48 yards in eight plays as Heinicke ran in again for a score, this time from eight yards out to give ODU a 21-7 advantage.
The Chanticleers responded with an 81-yard scoring drive as Hillary hit Matt Hazel for a 15-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 21-14.
Coastal forced an ODU punt and followed with an 80-yard scoring drive as Hillary hit Hazel for a one-yard pass on fourth and goal from the one to tie the score at 21.
The Monarchs responded in just three plays as Heinicke hit Roberts for 35-yards down the right sideline to give ODU the lead back. Tyree Lee had a big 28-yard run to get the drive started.
The ODU defense forced three first half turnovers as Craig Wilkins and Reggie Owens had interceptions to go along with Burnette's fumble recovery.
Tyree Lee ran for 89 yards on 14 carries while Goodwyn added 35 yards on eight attempts. Pinkard had six catches to go with his six catches and 154 yards and three scores while Mayers also had six grabs for 103 yards and a touchdown. Blair Roberts had four catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns.
Jeremy Height had 12 rushed for 89 yards for Coastal while Hillary rushed for 45 yards and a score.
Hazel finished the day with nine catches for 155 yards and two TD's while Nc Mastromatteo had four catches for 71 yards.

Senior Nate Ong was the game captain for Old Dominion.
Heinicke had two rushing TD's on the day, he now has a team-best 10 rushing scores on the year.
With six TD passes, Heinicke tied the single-game FCS playoff record for TD passes in a game. He tied Mike Smith of Northern Iowa who did it in 1987 and Clemente Gordon of Grambling who did it in 1989.
Heinicke has thrown 16 TD passes in three FCS playoff games. He tossed five each against Norfolk State and Georgia Southern a season ago.
Larry Pinkard set career-highs with three touchdowns and 154 receiving yards.
Alex Arain had a career-high 2.5 sacks to lead ODU. The Monarchs had six sacks overall.
The 11 wins is the most in school history, surpassing last season's 10 wins.
With 497 passing yards, Taylor Heinicke has now thrown for 4,655 yards this season. That is currently the second highest total in FCS history to only Steve McNair who passed for 4,863 yards for Alcorn State in 1994.
In addition, Heinicke is second to McNair in single-season total offense with 5,077 yards. McNair had 5,799 yards in 1994.
