MURRAY, Ky. - Donte Hill scored 16 points, DeShawn Painter 13 pointswith 11 rebounds and freshman Deion Clark added a career high 12 points in the Monarchs 79-72 loss to Murray State. The Racers were led by All-American Isaiah Canaan with 30 points, three assists and two steals.
The Monarchs trailed by as many as 12 early in the game (30-12 with 8:37 left inthe first half), but rallied to cut Murray State's lead to two, 33-31 with 3:41left in the first half on a jumper by Donte Hill. Murray State pushed it back up to five , 40-35 at halftime.
In the second half, the Monarchs outscored MSU, 13-5 to take a 48-47 lead with15:39 left in the game on a jumper by DeShawn Painter. During the second half, thecontest would be tied six times.
With 9:03 left, Painter hit another jumper to put ODU up 62-59, but Canaan wouldanswer with a three-pointer to tie the game at 62-62 with 85-6:40 left. ODU wouldtake two more leads, 65-62 after a Donte Hill trey Murray's Canaan ties with atrey of his own at 65-65 with 6:45 left. Hill would come right back with a layupto put the Monarchs up, 67-65 with 6:19 left, but Dexter Fields drained athree-pointer for a 68-67 Murray State lead.
ODU freshman Aaron Bacote hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 68, butCanaan hits a three for a 71-68 Murray lead with 2:49 left. The Monarchs wouldcut the lead to one, 73-72 after a couple of free throws by Nick Wright, but aBrandon Garrett layup, three Canaan free throws and one by Ed Daniel pushedMSU's lead to seven and the final, 79-72.
Ed Daniel added 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the Racers.
Despite Daniel's performance, ODU outrebounded the Racers 41-30 in a game where Murray State shot 49.1 percent from the field (28 of 57) and 42.3 percent at the line (11 of 26). The Monarchs have outrebounded all of their opponents this year.
Old Dominion (1-5) outscored the Racers from the bench 38-5 in its fourth consecutive loss, shooting 44.6 percent from the floor (29 of 65) and hitting just 7 of 23 3-pointers.
The Monarchs open CAA play next Saturday night in Williamsburg, when they take onthe Tribe of William and Mary.
