NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion and Georgia State each scored three goals in the first half but the Panthers netted the game-winner four minutes into overtime to take a 4-3 win over the Lady Monarchs Thursday night in Norfolk.
After a scoreless second half, just four minutes into overtime Alyssia Feronti sent a cross pass in from the left side that Whitney Ravan deflected just into the right side of the goal to give the Panthers a 4-3 victory.
The first half was exciting as both teams displayed scoring capabilities. Georgia State started first just two minutes into the contest when Jordan Young sent a cross from the right side to Lyndsey Gaffney who fired a shot from 10 yards out that Laura Bush got a hand on but couldn't keep out of the net as GSU took the 1-0 lead.
ODU stormed right back just 23 seconds later as Taylor Mertz sent a cross from the left side that Kelly Evans headed just inside the left corner over the head of GSU keeper Rebecca Toler to tie the score at one.
The Lady Monarchs took their first lead of the game in the 14th minute when Kelly Farrell fired a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off a GSU defender right to Ashlee Coutu who knocked it into the net for the 2-1 ODU lead.
Four minutes later GSU tied the score as Ravan dribbled down the middle but got the ball kicked away but right to teammate Jordan Young who netted a shot inside the left post to make it a 2-2 contest.
In the 37th minute Old Dominion retook the lead as Mertz sent a tap pass to Meghan Cozens who delivered a shot just inside the left post for her first goal of the season to give ODU a 3-2 lead.
Two minutes later ODU was called for a handball in the box to award GSU a penalty kick that Feronti connected on to tie the score at three to set up the overtime.
Georgia State outshot the Lady Monarchs 21-11 with Young having a team-best five shots. Coutu, Evans, Mertz and Farrell had two shots apiece for ODU.
Bush made six saves for Old Dominion.
ODU is back in action on Sunday when they travel to UNC Wilmington to take on the Seahawks at 2 p.m.
