Lady Monarchs Use Strong First Half, Late Run to Top GSU, 71-60

ATLANTA, Ga. - Mairi Buchan scored a career-high 16 points and Tia Lewis recorded her 1,000th career rebound as Old Dominion University women's basketball defeated Georgia State 71-60 Thursday night.

With the win, ODU improves to 6-12 overall and 3-3 on the year while Georgia State drops to 6-11 and 0-6 in the CAA.

Lewis recorded eight rebounds tonight and now joins an exclusive list, as she now has 1,000 career rebounds. She joins Anne Donovan, Inge Nissen, Tracy Claxton, Nancy Lieberman, Celeste Hill and Kelly Lyons. She now has 1,003 career boards.

With just under seven minutes to play, the Lady Monarchs held a 61-55 lead, and then reeled off 10-straight points to put the game away. Buchan added her fourth three of the night and Jackie Cook had six points, including four foul shots to give ODU a 71-55 lead.

The Panthers got back to within 58-53 on a layup from Cody Paulk and free throws from Jerlisa Taylor, Old Dominion pushed the lead back to eight at 61-53 on a free throw from JoNiquia Guilford and a layup from Lewis.

Early in the second half, GSU went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 46, but Mairi Buchan countered with two-straight three-pointers to give ODU a 52-46 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining.

The Lady Monarchs raced out to an early lead, going on a 12-2 run to take an 18-10 lead as Lewis had four points in the run and Becca Allison added five during the stretch.

ODU pushed the lead to nine on a jumper from Buchan but Georgia State used a 12-4 run to close the gap to 32-30, but ODU scored five quick points on a three-pointer from Guilford and a layup from Shakeva Richards to move the lead back to seven. Guilford added a free throw as ODU took a 38-32 halftime lead.

Buchan notched her career-high and led a season-best four Lady Monarchs in double-figures. Lewis and Cook each had 12 while Guilford added 11.

Alana Beroth led GSU with 15 while Chan Harris had 13.

The Lady Monarchs return home Sunday, Jan. 22 as they take on UNCW at 2 p.m.

Freshman guard Ashley Betz-White tied her career highs with seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.
Tia Lewis recorded eight rebounds to move into the 1,000 rebound club. She is just five away from tying Kelly Lyons for sixth all-time.
ODU tied a season-high with 14 steals.
The four players in double-figures is the most for ODU this season.
