Sailing Earns A Pair of Top Five Finishes

NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 11 Old Dominion University coed and women’s sailing teams earned a pair of top five finishes over the weekend in their three races.

In their second and final home event of the fall, ODU took third place out of 14 teams on the Elizabeth River in the South #1/Senator’s Cup Race. The Monarchs’ A-team tandem of junior skipper Evan Hoffmann and junior crew Jill Fattibene took second with 36 points while sophomore skipper Jaclyn Hollander and freshman Carly Peterson placed 10th with 115 points. In the B-team race, sophomore skipper Daniel Lochner and junior crew Haley Garst finished in fourth with 40 points while freshman skipper Daniel Montgomery and freshman crew Kaylie Gallagher took eighth with 89 points.

In St. Mary’s, Md. at the MAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy Championships, the Lady Monarchs placed fifth with 146 points out of 14 teams. The A-team duo of junior skipper Corina Radtke and senior crew Shannon Wilkins took third with 75 points while junior skipper Rachel Austin and freshman crew Grace Mason took fourth with 71 points in the B-team race.

Wind caused problems in the 70th anniversary of the Danmark Trophy race at the Coast Guard Academy as ODU took eight out of 20 teams. ODU’s A-team tandem of senior skipper Dillon Paiva and junior crew Chloe Constants finished in 12th with 85 points while freshman skipper Esteban Forrer and junior crew Julia Wiesner took seventh in the B-team race with 72 points.

Four events are on tab for the first weekend of October as the Hobart and William Smith Fall Intersectional takes place in Geneva, N.Y. and the South #2 race comes from Washington, D.C. In Annapolis, Md., the Navy Fall Women’s Intersectional takes place along with the MAISA Men’s Singlehanded Championships.
