NORFOLK, Va. - #5 Old Dominion Univerity quarterback Taylor Heinicke threw for a Division I record 730 yards and five touchdowns as Jarod Brown kicked a 25-yard field goal with 41 seconds left and Andre Simmons intercepted a pass to clinch the 64-61 win over #18/19 New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.
Heinicke's 730 yards are an NCAA Division I record and just one yard shy of the all-division record set by Zamir Amin of Menlo (Div. III) who passed for 731 yards against Cal Lutheran in 2000. Heinicke's 730-yards passes the previous Division I record of 716 yards by David Kilnger of Houston in 1990 against Arizona State. The previous FCS high was 624 set by Weber State's Jamie Martin against Idaho State in 1991.
Passing yards weren't the only Division I record set by Heinicke either. The sophomore signal caller who also ran the ball 11 times for a team-leading 61 yards totaled 791 yards of total offense surpassing the FBS record of 732 by David Klingler of Houston against Arizone State in 1990 and the FCS record 668 by Robert Kent of Jackson State vs. Alabama in 2001.
ODU, which trailed by as many as 20 and was behind 40-24 at the break, scored three-straight touchdowns to start the fourth quarter. Two touchdowns from Nick Mayers and a two-yard run from Angus Harper gave ODU its first lead of the game, 61-54, with 4:39 left in the game.
Less than a minute later, the Wildcats knotted the game at 61-61 with Andy Vailas on a 45-yard pass to R.J. Harris.
On the Monarchs following drive, ODU traveled 74 yards in 11 plays to set up Brown's game-winning field goal.
Mayers collected a school record 271 yards receiving with a trio of touchdowns also tying the mark for catches in a game with 12. Antonio Vaughan also tied the school record with his 12 catches for 143 yards.
For the Wildcats, Nico Steriti ran the ball for 201 yards on 21 carries, while quarterback Andy Vailas connected on 23 of his 38 attempts for 336 yards.
The #5 ODU Football Monarchs return to action on Saturday, September 29th at Richmond. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

Total Yards In A Game - 1,549
With ODU's 824 yards of total offense and New Hampshire's 725 yards of total offense the two squads combined for the most total yards in a FCS game in history with 1,549. The previous mark was 1,423 in a game featuring Murray St. (816) and Missouri St. (607) on Oct. 9, 2010.
The following are new ODU records ODU's thrilling 64-61 win over #18/19 New Hampshire:
- Sophomore quarterback Taylor Heinicke set records in pass attempts (79), completions (55), passing yards (730), and total offense (719).
- Redshirt senior Nick Mayers tied the school record for catches (12) and touchdown receptions (3) while setting a new record for receiving yards (271)
- Redshirt sophomore Antonio Vaughan tied the school record for catches (12).
- Team records include total offense (814) and all-purpose yards (1027).
HIGH SCORING AFFAIR:
The 125 points scored in Saturday's 64-61 win by the Monarchs surpasses the highest combined point total in a CAA contest. The previous high was 118 in a 62-56 in five contest with Richmond and Delaware. The previous high in regulation was 106 in a 64-42 UMass victory over New Hampshire in 1988 and a New Hampshire 59-47 win over Maine in 2005.
The 61 points scored by the Wildcats were the most points scored by an ODU opponent. The previous high was 55 by #2/3 Georgia Southern in Statesboro in last year's second round playoff game. Previous high by an opponent at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium was 50 in a 50-37 loss to Cal Poly back on Oct. 9, 2010.
THRU THE UPRIGHTS:
Kicker Jarod Brown bookended Saturday's game as he made both his field goals, a 22-yard attempt to open up scoring for the Monarchs with 10:04 on the clock in the first half and his 25-yard attempt to give ODU the 64-61 lead with 41 seconds left in the game.
Brown improved to 5-of-6 in his field goals attempts this season, which includes his school tying 51-yard field goal in the season opener vs. Duquesne. He also connected on all six of his PATs attempts to improve to 29-of-29 in 2012 and 125-of-129 in his three-year career.
UPDATING THE NUMBERS:
- Redshirt sophomore Antonio Vaughan registered his third touchdown of the 2012 season on a 15-yard pass from Taylor Heiicke that cut the Monarchs deficit to 30-17 with 4:02 left in the second quarter. It was Vaughan's eighth TD reception of his career.
- Sophomore Tayor Heinicke had a nine-yard run into the end zone with 2:25 left in the second quarter as the Wildcats lead 37-24. It was his second rushing TD of season and sixth of his career.
- Sophomore Jakwail Bailey recorded his first collegiate touchdow at the 7:10 mark of the third quarter as ODU trailed 47-31.
- Junior Colby Goodwyn had a seven-yard carry over the end line in the closing minutes of the third quarter to cut the Monarch deficit to nine, 47-38, for his third rushing TD of the 2012 campaign and ninth of his career.
- Fellow running back Angus Harper had a two-yard run into the end zone to give ODU its first lead of the game at 61-54 with 4:39 left in the game for his second TD run of 2012 and 12 of his career.
OTHER NUMBERS:
Old Dominion improved to 31-8 all-time and 19-5 all-time at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium. The Monarchs improved to 1-1 in CAA openers and 2-0 in CAA home openers. They also improved to 7-2 all-time against CAA opponents.
