NORFOLK, VA-- Georgia State's (23-31/13-16) designated hitter Joey Wood's two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a 6-6 tie to lift the Panthers to an 8-6 victory over Old Dominion (19-33/9-20) Friday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
ODU led 6-3 after a four-run fifth inning led by a two-run RBI singles from senior Joey Burney (Gloucester, VA.). ODU scored single runs in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Baker and in the fourth inning on an RBI single from sophomore Ben Verlander (Maidens, VA.).
The Panthers rallied for three runs in the six to tie the game. Wood doubled inthe first round, Scott Sarratt's sacrifice fly plated Joel Van Asch from third to make it 6-5. Greg Bowder then singled home Joey Wood to make it 6-6.
In the seventh inning with two outs, Van Asch doubled to left field and Wood followed with a homerun to leftcenter for an 8-6 lead. It was his sixth homer of the season.
Reliever Jake Dyer came on in the fifth inning for Georgia State and held ODU tojust one hit with no walks and five strikeouts for the win, his fifth of the season.
The Monarchs finished with seven hits on the night led by freshman catcher Michael Perez(Fairfax Station, VA.) with two. Joey Burney with two.
The Panthers had 14 hits on the night led by shortstop Caden Bailey with three, while Drew Shields, Jonathan Kolowich, Joel Van Asch, Joey Wood and Greg Bowder each had two hits. Van Asch scored three times tonight.
The third and final game of the CAA series is Saturday at 1 p.m. During a pre-gameceremony ODU will honor its eight seniors; Josh Wright (SS), Josh Tutwiler (catcher), Chris Baker (RF/1b), Brandon Shelton (2b), Brent Frazier (3b), Ben Tomchick (RHP), CJ Huyett (RHP) and Phil McCarthy (RHP).
