Northeastern Holds Off Monarchs, 6-4

BROOKLINE, MASS-- ODU senior Josh Tutwiler drove in two runs, but the Huskies of Northeastern erupted for four runs in the seventh and held off a Monarch ninth inning rally for a 6-4 CAA victory Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Diamond.

After four scoreless innings between ODU's Ben Tomchick and NU's Nick Berger Northeastern broke through first in the fifth inning. Oliver Hart led off with a double, then scored on Aaron Barbosa single for a 1-0 Huskie lead.

In the sixth, ODU freshman Josh Eldridge kept the inning alive with a two-out single, followed by another single by senior Chris Baker, then senior Josh Tutwiler doubled to left, scoring both Eldridge and Baker for a 2-1 ODU lead.

In the bottom of the sixth Jon Leroux doubled to left and came home on Jason Vosler's single up the middle which tied the game at 2-2.

Northeastern re-took the lead in the seventh on John Puttress's bases loaded RBI Sacrifice fly, scoring pinch runner Jason Roth from third. The Huskies then broke the game open with a bases loaded double by Leroux which scored three for a 6-2 lead.

ODU loaded the bases in the top of the ninth as Joey Burnie led off with a single, then Mike Perez and Brandon Shelton were hit with pitches. Brent Frazier walked to force home Burnie to make it 6-3. After a Huskie error, Perez scored to make it 6-4 before reliever Dylan Maki got the final out to preserve the win.

Chris Baker led ODU with two hits while Josan Vosler led Northeastern with three RBI. The Huskies had 12 hits on the day with six players getting two hits each.

The third and final game of the series will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
