SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE MOMENTS:
Series One - 2 Min Drill: At -12 Yard Line:
* The defense got stops both times as the offense tried to go down field.
* On the first drive, Taylor Heinicke moved the ball up five yards and then facing fourth and five, got the ball to Antonio Vaughan, who was stopped by corner T.J. Cowart just shy of a first down.
* On the second drive, the offense was looking at third and seven when Alex Johnson swooped in for a sack.
Series Two: 1st and 10 : At -25 Yard line:
* Back-up quarterback Nate Ong scrambled and found Kirk Spellman for a 24-yard reception. However, the defense would not allow field position to be flipped thanks in part to sacks from lineman Alex Arain and linebacker John Darr.
* With the offense facing fourth and two at its own 48, Larry Pinkard had a 22-yard catch.
* Corner Reggie Owens broke-up a pass intended for Chris Lovitt, but the offense rebounded as running back Tyree Lee broke through the gaps down to the one yard line and then punched it in on the next play.
Series Three: 3rd and 4th Down Situations:
* With the offense looking at third and seven from its own 22, Marquel Thomas was hit in stride right smack on the 50 and kept going for the touchdown.
* Facing fourth and 30, the defense forced a stop with corner Reggie Owens stopping Antonio Vaughan well before the chains.
* Just inches from a first down and the offense at its own 39, Nate Ong found Blair Robert to flip the field with a 14-yard pass.
* Looking at fourth and three at offense's own 37, Nate Ong found Blair Roberts yet again at nearly the identical spot.
* At the goal line, the defense prevented any scoring on four straight situations. Linebacker Craig Wilkins came flying in to stop Antonio Vaughan from the end zone. Fellow linebacker John Darr collected an interception returning the ball all the way down to the offense's 30. Then with the offensive looking to score at third and goal, corner Akil Jones had two consecutive pass break-ups in the deep corner of the end zone.
Series Four: 1st and 10: At + 40 Yard Line:
* Taylor Heinicke found Antonio Vaughan for a 10-yard completion. Facing third and 10, Heinicke hit Blair Roberts to move the offense to first and goal. Colby Goodwyn got the squad to the one-yard line, which was followed by Larry Pinkard scoring the touchdown.
* On the next set, the defense pushed the white shirts back into their own territory thanks in part to a sack by redshirt Kevin Buchanan.
Series Five: 1st and 10 : At -32 Yard Line:
* A sack by co-captain Chris Burnette forced the offense into third and 22, but tight end Mitch Castleberry brought his squad to midfield with a 23-yard reception. Chris Lovitt then got the ball into the defense's territory with a 12-yard reception. Linebacker Rob Mahan and safety Neal-Anthony Hale put an end to the catches though with back-to-back pass break-ups forcing the offensive into fourth down.
* On the next drive, Angus Harper carried the ball twice, first for a eight-yard carry and then on to a first down on the next rush. Colby Goodwyn caught the ball to get his squad down to its own 20. Defensive end Kevin Buchanan stopped the momentum shortly with a sack, but the then Blair Roberts got his hands on the ball down the middle of the end zone.
Series 6 - 1 and 10: At + 22 Yard Line:
* The second to last series of the day had the defense force the field goals unit in three of the four sets that were run. Jarod Brown hit field goals from the 34- and 32-yard ranges.
* The offense got a score on the last set with Nate Ong getting the ball into the hands of Larry Pinkard.
Series 7 - 2 Min Drill: At -4 Yard Line:
* Colby Goodwyn moved the ball down field to the offensive 14 followed by Kirk Spellman nabbing a reception for the second straight first down. Corner Akil Jones came up with a stop forcing the offense to face fourth down and three at its own 19. Taylor Heinicke launched the ball to Larry Pinkard, who was left wide open down the left side line, getting his squad to the defensive 39. Chris Lovitt and Kirk Spellman both helped move the chains again on respective catches followed by a Heinicke keeper brining the offense down to the 15 with just :13 seconds left on the clock. Bringing out the PAT unit, the kick went wide.
SPRING GAME REMINDER:
Old Dominion will host its annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 21 at 3:00 p.m. at Foreman Field.
SAVE A LIFE:
The Football Monarchs will host the fourth annual Bone Marrow Registry Drive from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 19th at Webb Center.Since starting this event, the Old Dominion football team has helped register over 650 people to the bone marrow donor registry in an attempt to help save lives from life-threatening diseases nationwide.There are 20 million people worldwide who are registered as potential marrow donors. Still, there are only about 250 matches found each year, making it a 1-in-80,000 chance that a registered donor will be a match.In what has become an annual event for the Monarchs, Wilder and his team are looking to help the more than 6,000 men, women and children who are searching the National Marrow Registry for a life-saving donor. These patients have leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases that can be treated by a bone marrow or cord blood transplant. For many of these patients, a transplant may be the best and only hope of a cure.
