NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University coed sailing team fought through some eventful weather over the weekend but competed successfully in three different venues to begin their first full weekend of spring competition.

At the ODU Spring Open in a conference minor event, Old Dominion took third place with 81 points after unstable winds on Saturday and cold temperatures on Sunday in Norfolk. Navy won the event with 44 points while St. Mary's College took second with 77 points, just edging out ODU in the 18-team event.

Sailing for the Monarchs in the A-Division race was junior skipper Zachary Runci for races 1-6 and sophomore skipper Evan Hoffmann for races 7-10 couple with freshman crew Colin Voigt for races 1-4 and senior crew Rachel Pokorny for races 5-10. The combined team for ODU placed third with 40 points.

In the B-Division race, the Monarchs took second behind freshman skipper Jacob Spracher and freshman crew Jaclyn Hollander who tallied 41 points.

At the Charleston Women's Intersectional in Charleston, S.C., teams had to avoid afternoon thunderstorms on Saturday while a cooler Sunday provided strong winds after morning rains subsided. ODU placed fifth with 230 points out of nine teams while host College of Charleston won the event with 138 points. In the A-Division race, sophomore skipper Corina Radtke and senior crew Jordan Stock, who split time with junior crew Shannon Wilkins, took seventh with 135 points.

In the B-Division race, freshman skipper Andrea Luna and senior crew Arianna Baker sailed to fourth with 95 points in a tight finish at the top.

In the first team race of the 2012 spring season and perfect sailing weather near 60 degrees in Annapolis, Md. on Saturday, ODU took ninth and led the silver division after going 13-9 overall in the event. The Monarchs went 6-1 against the silver division, falling only to host Navy while defeating Wisconsin, New York Maritime, Clemson, Cornell, Eckered and Washington College. Georgetown won the event after winning a tightly contested Gold Division.
