NORFOLK, Va.- With the women already securing the victory across the court in today's doubleheader, Old Dominion University men's tennis picked up it's second consecutive win of the season beating Winthrop University 5-2.
"We came out with a lot of energy in doubles, and that carried energy into singles. I was happy to see our guys battle through some adversity, and it was great to see Chris, Carlos, and Wes fight through being uncomfortable and ultimately run away with matches," head coach Aljosa Piric said. "Can was able to hang tough in his match and was able to lift his game at key times to earn a win against a good Winthrop player. Credit goes to the Winthrop players; they battled and pushed us hard. We will keep learning from each match and continue to get better."
Krzysztof Muzalewski with Wesley Barrett, and Carlos Lopez-Villa with Alfredo Rodriguez got things started for the Monarchs wining doubles matches 8-3 and 8-5 respectively. Can Cetinel and Albert Ochagavia dropped their doubles match to Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi 8-7 in a tie-breaker set.
With the team score at 1-0 in favor of Old Dominion University, Carlos Lopez-Villa won in singles in straight sets 7-6, 6-0 to make it 2-0. Fahoum Fahoum and Alfredo Rodriguez lost to Guy Kubi and Dylan Comerford in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, and 6-3, 7-5 correspondingly and the Winthrop Eagles tied it at 2.
Krzysztof Muzalewski, Wesley Barrett, and Can Cetinel cleaned up shop for the Monarchs by winning in three sets (2-6, 6-1, 6-0), (6-0, 6-7, 6-2), and (5-7, 6-3, 7-6). Wesley Barrett secured the team victory with his win and Can Cetinel smashed four aces right down the "t" in his last few games to give the Monarchs the edge.
Old Dominion University is now 2-3 on the campaign and hosts the Yale Bulldogs tomorrow at 10 AM at the Folkes-Wilkes Indoor Tennis Facility.
