NORFOLK, Va.- The Old Dominion University Monarchs hosted both the UMBC Retrievers and the Georgetown Hoyas today as part of its first home doubleheader of the season. The Monarchs defeated the Retrievers 6-1 but also lost a hard match to the Hoyas 6-1.
Against UMBC, Alfredo Rodriguez and Carlos Lopez-Villa started off strong for the Monarchs winning in doubles 8-2. The pairs of Wesley Barrett and Krzysztof Muzalewski and Can Cetinel with Albert Ochagavia cleaned up shop in doubles as each won their matches 8-4.
The Monarchs took the lead in doubles and never looked back as Ochagavia, Muzalewski, and Lopez Villa stayed sharp in singles and won over Cristian Hadel, Joseph Adewumi, and Gaulthier Berret, respectively. Barrett closely followed suit and stuck Juan Manual Aranzazu 6-1, 7-5.
Can Cetinel lost a tough match to Kamal Patel 5-7, 6-3, (10-5) in No. 6 singles but Rodriguez tallied the final team point with a win over Daniel Gray 5-7, 6-4, (10-8) No. 5.
After a brief intermission, the Monarchs stepped back onto the court at the Folkes/ Stevens Indoor Tennis Center and took on the Hoyas.
This go around the Monarchs were not as fortunate in doubles as both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles fell to the pairs of Andrew Bruhn with Charlie Caris and Andrew Dottino with Alex Tropiano. At No. 3 doubles the Monarch pair of Alfredo Rodriguez and Carlos Lopez-Villa continued their hot steak together and topped Shane Korber and John Brosens 8-6.
Trailing 1-0, Albert Ochagavia won in straights over Korber 6-3, 6-3 to tie the match. Muzalewski, Lopez Villa, and Barrett all dropped heartbreakers at Nos. 2-4 in three sets a piece.
Down 4-1, Alfredo Rodriguez and Can Cetinel battled their opponents diligently but lost in straight sets to Brian Ward and Casey Distaso respectively.
The Monarchs are 4-5 after the split in today's matches and will host the St. Francis University Red Hash tomorrow, February 19, at 11 AM.
