NORFOLK, Va. - For the first time this season the No. 1 Old Dominion field hockey team tasted defeat as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 2-1 overtime thriller against No. 7 Duke Sunday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

The Blue Devils avenge an early season double overtime home loss to ODU and improve to 10-5 on the year. The Lady Monarchs fall to 15-1 overall and suffer their first loss to an Atlantic Coast Conference team in six games.

Old Dominion started the contest off strong as senior Emma Batten deflected a blast from classmate Stephanie Kratzer in the 18th minute to put the Lady Monarchs up 1-0. The goal was Batten's fourth of the weekend and 17th of the season.

With less than two minute remaining in the opening stanza, Duke got on the scoreboard when Caashia Karringten gathered a rebounded shot in front of the cage and scored from the right side. The game remained tied for the remained of the half and the entire second period.

The squads would need an extra session of play for the second time this season, but this time Duke prevailed as Mary Nielsen received a pass from Emmie Le Marchand and scored the game-winner just 29 seconds into the period.

Old Dominion held a 17-10 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in penalty corners. Lady Monarch goalkeeper Devon Seifert recorded a pair of saves, including an impressive stop in a one-on-one opportunity against Duke's Jessica Buttinger in the first half. Samantha Nelson came up big for the Blue Devils, posting eight saves in the contest.

The Lady Monarchs return to Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday as they welcome James Madison to the Powhatan Sports Complex for a 5 p.m. clash. The game can be seen live on Monarch TV.
