COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second time this season senior Emma Batten scored three goals and Old Dominion cruised to victory against defending NCAA Champion Maryland. The Lady Monarchs backed up an early season home win against the Terrapins with a dominant 5-2 win in front of 822 fans Friday evening at UM's Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The Old Dominion victory snaps Maryland's 39-game home win streak that dated back to 2008. The Terps have only lost 10 games all-time at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in 112 games played.
With the win the Lady Monarchs improve to 15-0 on the year and 5-0 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. Maryland drops to 11-2 with both losses coming against ODU.
Batten now has a team-high 16 goals on the year, with six scores coming against the Terps. Senior Stephanie Kratzer and junior Danielle Clutter also scored for the Lady Monarchs Friday.
Old Dominion wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, tallying a goal just 39 seconds into the game. Clutter tipped in the first score off a rebounded shot to give the junior her fourth goal of the season. The Lady Monarchs added their second goal at the 5:45 mark as Kratzer scored on ODU's first corner of the game.
Maryland answered in the 14th minute as Jill Witmer put the Terrapins on the board when she finished off a loose ball as Monarchs' goalkeeper Devon Seifert came out of the cage.
Old Dominion added another goal before the break when Batten knocked one in off her own rebounded shot with just under 16 minutes remaining to give ODU a 3-1 lead.
Batten added her second goal of the game just over seven minutes into the second half when she sent in a shot off of a rebound. She added her third goal of the night when she floated in a shot from Kratzer to make it 5-1 Lady Monarchs with 24 minutes remaining.
Maryland added a late goal to cut ODU's lead to 5-2, but the Terrapins were unable to get any closer.
The game was very close statistically with Maryland holding a narrow 15-14 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Old Dominion returns home Sunday for the first time since September 25. The Lady Monarchs will welcome No. 7 Duke to the Powhatan Sports Complex for a 1 p.m. contest. The two squads met earlier this season in Durham, N.C. with ODU winning a double overtime thriller, 3-2.
