NORFOLK, Va. - Hallie Rogers scored with just over one minute remaining in the second half to lift Old Dominion University women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Towson Sunday afternoon in Norfolk.
With the win, ODU improves to 4-4-2 overall and 1-0-1 in CAA play, while Towson drops to 5-5 and 0-2 in conference action.
With time running out, Rogers got control of the ball on the right side, made a nice move to evade a Tiger defender and fired a shot from 25 yards out that went over the keepers head to give the Lady Monarchs the 2-1 advantage. The goal is the first of her career.
"The First half we had quality chances all over the place, we just weren't finishing and that's frustrating, but we were getting those chances and that is all we can do as a team," head coach Joe Pereira said. "The fact that we dominated the statistical side of this match doesn't matter, all that matters is the win against a conference opponent."
Old Dominion got on the board first for the third-straight game when Amber Cook headed in a corner kick from Rachael Carroll. Carroll's kick went to the far post where Cook headed it into the goal for the 1-0 ODU lead.
Towson knotted the score at one when Katie Holtzapple scored on a free kick in the 21st minute.
ODU held the majority of play throughout the game, otushooting Towson 16-9. The Lady Monarch had several chances, as shots by Lisa Bernardini and Ashlee Coutu were stopped by Towson keeper Jocelyn Papciak. In the 43rd minute ODU was taken down in the box but Bernardini's penalty kick was stopped by Papciak.
Brianna Alvarado made two saves to pick up the win in goal for ODU while Papciak had eight stops for Towson.
The Lady Monarchs finish out their homestand on Thursday, Sept. 29 against UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
