NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion continued its stellar start to the 2011 season Friday as the Lady Monarchs (3-0) defeated defending national champion and current No. 1 Maryland, 4-0, at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
The win snaps Maryland's 17-game winning streak dating back to last season and is the worse loss for the Terrapins since November 10, 2002 when Wake Forest upended the Terps by the same score.
Old Dominion has started the year off with three victories over Top 10 teams and the Lady Monarchs have done so in a dominant fashion, outscoring their opponents 13-3 in those contests.
Current Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week Emma Batten continued to be a force, netting three goals to up her total to six on the year. Senior Stephanie Kratzer also tallied her first goal of the season for ODU.
Senior's Stephanie Kratzer and Rebecca Condie and junior's Christy Longacre and Julie Hodge anchored old Dominion's stellar defensive effort. Senior goalkeeper Devon Seifert recorded the first shutout of Maryland since November 11, 2007.
Despite trailing Maryland in corner opportunities 5-1, ODU held a slight 11-10 edge in shots.
The Lady Monarchs continue their extremely tough non-conference schedule on Sunday with a home contest against No. 3 Virginia. The game is set to get underway at 1 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Fans not in attendance can check for updates throughout the game by following @ODUFieldHockey on twitter.
