TUCSON, ARIZ--Old Dominion University's freshman designated hitter Joey Burney (Gloucester, VA.) has been named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American squad by Collegiate Baseball newspaper today.
Burney started 40 of the 45 games he played in with a .257 batting average. He had seven doubles, eight homers and 34 RBI with a .466 slugging percentage and a .336 on base percentage.
In 27 CAA contests, Burney hit .286 with seven homers and 28 RBI and a .531 slugging percentage along with a .321 on base percentage.
Burney also hit a key home run in ODU's 4-3 win against UNC Wilmington in a CAA elimination game which helped propel the Monarchs into the Championship game.
Burney, who was selected to the CAA's All-Rookie squad is one of four league freshmen receiving All-American honors. He joins Ty McFarland (James Madison), Aaron Barbosa( Northeastern) and Bill Cullen (VCU).
