WILMINGTON, NC-- Junior righthander Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA.) tossed a complete game six-hitter and junior firstbaseman Chris Baker (Chesapeake, VA.) drove in three runs to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion (29-25) to a 7-3 victory over Georgia State (37-21) in an elimination game today. ODU will play again tonight at 7 p.m. against the loser of the James Madison-UNC Wilmington3:30 contest. The Championship round is Saturday at 1 p.m.
It was Tomchick's (8-4) first complete game this year and he fanned a career high 10 batters, giving up three runs and walking only one. He now has 81 strikeouts in 91.1 innings and a 3.15 ERA.
Monarchs got on the board first with three runs in the first inning on a two-run triple down the right field line by Baker which plated Brandon Shelton (Chesapeake, VA. ) and Brent Frazier (Fairfax Station, VA.). Shawn Sizemore's (Newport News, VA.) groundout brought home Baker for a 3-0 lead.
ODU added two more in the second with two outs on a double by Shelton to score Kenny Stoneback and Frazier's single which brought home Shelton for a 5-0 lead.
Bryan Condatta's two-out double down the left field line scored Carter Sackett and Aaron Schmitz, then Condatta later scored on a Monarch throwing error to help the Panthers cut into ODU's lead to make it 5-3 after two innings.
ODU added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Shawn Sizemore which scored Josh Wright, and in the ninth Chris Baker singled home Shelton to make it, 7-3.
Baker led ODU with three hits and three RBI, while Shelton, Frazier and Sizemore each had two hits. carter sacket led Georgia State with two hits. Baker is nowhitting .303 with a team best 61 RBI.The victory was the Monarchs first CAA Tournament win since 2007.
