NORFOLK, VA--The Old Dominion pitching trio of Ben Tomchick, Dean Ali and Adam Wisniewski scattered sevenhits for a combined 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association shutout victory over Towson Saturday afternoon. ODU improves to 17-16 overall and 9-5 in the CAAand have won four straight league series.
Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA. ) pitched seven innings, allowing five hits with four walks and five strikeouts for his fifth win of the season. He is now 5-3 with a 3.04 ERA. Freshman Dean Ali (Chesapeake, Va.) and senior Adam Wisniewski (Norfolk, Va.) pitched the final two innings. Wisniewski picked up his CAA leading ninth save of the season. This was ODU's first shutout of the season.
The Monarchs broke up the scoreless pitchers duel between Tomchick and Towson Michael Trionfo inthe bottom of the fifth inning. Nate Hartman (Orlando, FL.) led off with a single and Edgar Hernandez (Luquillo, PR) walked. Towson reliever ZachUmberger came on to pitch and his throwing error on Kenny Stoneback's (Colonial Heights, VA.) sacrifice bunt scored Hartman from second.Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA. ) then singled home Edgar Hernandez and Chris Baker's (Chesapeake, Va. )sacrifice fly plated Stoneback for a 3-0 ODU lead.
Josh Wright and Nathan Hartman led ODU with two hits each. Wright is now hitting .319 overall with31 RBI. He is hitting .389 in CAA games. Hartman upped his overall batting average to .304, whileChris Baker has a team best 35 RBI.
Towson shortstop Nick Natoli and catcher Brian Wyman led the Tigers with two hits each.The Tigers stranded 12 runners in the game. Towson left two runners on base in the first, second, seventh and eighth innings.
The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
