ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 10th-ranked Old Dominion University women's sailing team finished third at the MAISA Women's Championships this past weekend. The Lady Monarchs trialed No. 5 St. Mary's by two and No. 6 Hobart/William Smith by a single point in the tightly bunched 12-team field.
Both St. Mary's and Hobart/William Smith gain automatic bids into the ICSA/Sperry Top Sider Women's National Championship, while ODU, No. 7 Georgetown, Navy and Pennsylvania earn berths into the semi-finals.
In an exciting finish, each of the top three teams were within a point entering the 12th and final race. St. Mary's edged Hobart/William Smith by one point, with ODU trailing the Seahawks by just two.
The Lady Monarchs won four races and finished third in the A-Division with senior skipper Stephanie Roble and junior crew Emily Reich in the boat. Senior skipper Morgan Wilson sailed nine races with sophomore Shannon Wilkins and three races with junior Jordan Stock as ODU finished second in B-Division sailing.
The 14th-ranked ODU co-ed team competed in the Admiral's Cup at Kings Point, finishing 15th. The College of Charleston won the regatta, which was shortened Sunday due to a lack of wind.
