Monarchs Win 14-0 Behind Tomchick and ODU Bats

NORFOLK, VA--Junior righthander Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA. ) pitched eight scoreless innings and the Monarchs pounded out 21 hits for a 14-0Colonial Athletic Association win over George Mason (16-23/4-16)Saturday at the BudMetheny Baseball Complex. ODU is now 20-20 overall and 12-8 in the CAA, as every Monarch starter had at least one hit.

Tomchick (6-4) scattered eight hits, walked two and fanned seven in the victory to lower his ERA to2.98. Erick Baker (Marietta, PA.) pitched the scoreless ninth to preserved the Monarchs second shutout of the season.

Senior rightfielder Nathan Hartman (Orlando, Fl.) and junior firstbaseman Chris Baker (Chesapeake, Va.) each knocked in three runs,while Joey Burney (Gloucester, VA.) and Brent Frazier (Fairfax Station, VA.) knocked in two runs each.

Burney, a freshman DH went four-for-four on the day, including his sixth homer of the season, aTwo-run shot in the sixth with Shawn Sizemore (Newport News, VA.) aboard. Baker and Shelton each had three hits.

Hartman belted his fourth homer of the season in the five-run second inning for ODU. He also singledIn a run in the third. Baker singled in ODU's first run of the game in the first, then doubled home two runs in the second.

George Mason had 10 hits on the day led by shortstop Brig Tison, firstbaseman Mick Foley and outfielder Jake Kalish with two each.

The third and final game of the CAA series is Sunday at 2 p.m.
