Georgia State Defeats ODU, 8-4

ATLANTA, GA--Georgia State's (27-10/8-6) Mark Micowski knocked in four runs to lead the Panthers to an 8-4 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion (18-18/10-7)Saturday afternoon at the Pantherville Baseball complex. GSU scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Shortstop Joey Burney (Poquoson, VA.) singled them home to give ODU a 2-0 lead. Senior catcher Edgar Hernandez (Luquillo, PR) belted his second homerun of the season with Ty Yesenski aboard in the ninth.

ODU starter Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA. )pitched four scoreless innings, but in the fifth inning GSU rallied with RBI hits from Drew Shields, Bryan Condatta, and a two run-single by Mark Micowski gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead.

Tomchick (5-4) finished the day with five strikeouts, one walk and seven hits in five innings of work.

Georgia State scored four more runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run double by Micowski. GSU's Charlie Olson pitched seven innings , allowing just two runs with eight strikeouts for his fourth win of the season.

Micowski and Shields led the Panthers with three hits on the day, whileHammond had two hits.

Josh Wright led ODU with three hits, while Edgar Hernandez had two and two RBI. Wright is now batting .347 for the Monarchs.

The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
