Monarchs Sail To Second-Place Finish at Old Dominion Open

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion sailing posted a strong second-place finish at the Old Dominion open, held in Norfolk this past weekend. The Monarchs trailed only Georgetown in the 16-team field.

Old Dominion boasted the strongest B-Division boat in the regatta as freshman skipper Brady Stagg and classmate Alexa Cavalieri claimed the top spot and 32 points in the division.

The Monarch duo won five of the 12 races sailed and finished second in four others.Sophomore skipper Zach Runci teamed up with junior crew Rachel Pokorny in the A-Division for a fourth-place finish. They won a pair of races and posted eight Top 5 results.

Georgetown won the regatta, while St. Mary's finished 10 points behind ODU for third. Navy and NY Maritime rounded out the Top 5.

Old Dominion also competed this past weekend at the Graham Hall Team Race in Annapolis, Md. The Monarchs sent sailors Stephanie Roble, Dillon Paiva, Gavin Rudolph, Emily Reich, Julia Wiesner, Jill Fattibene, Chloe Constants and Miles Martschink to compete.ODU started the regatta slow, going 2-5 in its first seven races, but the Monarchs ended strong, winning five of their final seven matchups to finish 7-7 overall and in 14th position.

Old Dominion returns to the water March 12-13 at the Navy Spring Women's regatta in Annapolis and the St. Mary's Team Race in St. Mary's Maryland.
