Swimming & Diving Back In The Water At East Carolina Saturday

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming squads are back in the water this Saturday when they take on East Carolina at Minges Natatorium.

The ODU men enter Saturday's meet with the Pirates at 4-0 and have won nine straight meets dating back to last season.

In their last meet, the Monarchs defeated George Washington with its 142-106 win as they picked up nine first place finishes led by CAA Swimmer of the Week Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) with top times in the 100 and 200 back. Also picking up wins for the Monarchs against the Colonials were freshman Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) in the 50 free, three-time CAA Swimmer of the Week Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) in the 100 free, and senior Kris Hagg (Skovde, Sweden) in 200 free, freshman Jason Haigh (Williamsburg, Va.) in the 100 breast and freshman Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) in the 200 fly.

Last year against ECU, the ODU men picked up a 171-117 victory over the Pirates with 13 victories. Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) was the top finisher in the 50 and 100 free, while Jason Brame also earned the top time in the 1000 free. Additionally diver David Skorupa captured first place on the 1-meter with a score of 291.83.

The ODU women meanwhile upped their overall mark to 5-3, in their last meet, defeating George Washington by a score of 139-115.

The Lady Monarchs had eight first place finishes in the win over the Colonials led by two-time CAA backstroke champion and CAA Swimmer of the Week April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.). Barrientos, a senior co-captain, won both the 100 and 200 back for the Lady Monarchs. Also taking home wins for the Lady Monarchs were freshmen Abby Vance (Raleigh, N.C.) and Malin Ekstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) in a pair of freestyle events, junior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) in the 100 breast (1:04.17), senior co-captian Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) in the 200 breast (2:24.88), and freshman Laura Cempel (Mokena, Ill.) in the 200 fly (2:09.27).

Last year against ECU, the ODU women fell to the Pirates by a score of 130-170. The Lady Monarchs earned nine victories with April Barrientos bringing home wins in the 100 and 200 back and Danielle Naylor picking up wins in the 500 and 1000 free. Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) also earned a top time in the 100 breast. The ODU record holder in the event posted a first place time of 1:05.06, while Jessica Hubert gave the Lady Monarchs another victory in the 200 fly and Lauren Fiskus followed with a victory in the 200 breast.

Following Saturday's meet with the Pirates, the ODU Swimming and Diving teams will travel to Fairfax, Va. for a pod meet featuring Army, American, and CAA rival George Mason.
