NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University (7-2) started the game on an 18-0 run and never looked back in a dominating 81-39 romp over Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
ODU senior Ben Finney became the 45th player in Monarch history to go over the1,000 career point mark. The Portsmouth, VA. native put ODU up 10-0 with a layupat the 15:27 mark to reach 1000, then scored another basket at the 10:12 mark togive ODU a 20-4 lead for his 1002 career point.
ODU held the Hawks without a bucket until the 12:36 mark when Lyvann Obame Obame scored on a layup.
UMES countered with a 10-2 run to make the score 20-10 but the Monarchs scored six quick points, capped by a paire of free throws from Kent Bazemore and one from Frank Hassell.
The Monarchs quickly pushed their lead over 20 on a three-pointer by DeLancey, and the lead never got under 20 the rest of the way.
Trian Iliadis led the Monarchs with a career-high 14 points and also a career best five assists. Hassell added his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 boards while Carter chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds. Chris Cooper tied the ODU Ted Constant Center record with a career-high 16 rebounds. He ties Alex Loughton, who had 16 versus George Mason in 2004. At halftime, Cooper had10 rebounds, just one shy of the entire UMES squad.
Redshirt freshman Anton Larsen scored a career-best nine points and grabbed a career-high four rebounds.He also hit two-for-two from three-point range.
Trian Iliadis added a career high 14 points and dished out five assists. Marquel De Lancey also dished out five assists, scored six points and grabbed a career high tying five rebounds.
ODU dominated the boards with 64 rebounds which is a Constant Center record and justseven shy of the overall ODU team mark of 71 set in 1976 against Roanoke. The 42-point margin of victory is the 17th largest in school history and the 39 points byUMES is the lowest in the Ted since the 38 last year by Bethune-Cookman and Mt. St. Mary's. The overall lowest opponent point total is 35 by Toledo in 2007.
Obame Obame and Dishawn Bradshaw led UMES with eight points each, while Hillary Haley hauled down a team leading seven rebounds.
The Hawks shot .259 (15-58) from the floor, while ODU hit .432(32-74). ODU committed a season low of just seven turnovers. ODU's bench outscored UMES, 42-10.The 81 points tonight equaled the same number of points in the Monarchs last gameagainst East Carolina for a season high. ODU not only scored the first 18 points of the game, but also scored the last 13.
The Monarchs return to action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against the Dayton Flyerswhich will be ODU's fourth game in a week.
