NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) broke his second Nike Cup record as he won his second title with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:57.87 in the 200 breast.
Arnason was one of six Monarch and Lady Monarch finalists at the 2010 Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup at Koury Natatorium.
The ODU men moved up one spot on the final day of competition to sixth overall with 174.5 points. Host North Carolina won the event (1440 points) followed by Navy in second (710.5 points), and South Carolina in third (683 points).
The ODU women meanwhile finished in seventh place accumulating 276.5 points. Host North Carolina won with 1440 points followed by Duke in second (503) and South Carolina in third (495).
Sophomore Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) and junior Maddie Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) were each finalists in the 200 fly. Hubert swam to an NCAA "B" cut and ODU record time of 2:00.37 to claim second place. Hubert, who had set the ODU record in 200 fly last season, surpasses her previous mark of 2:02.96. Stiles meanwhile claimed sixth in the 200 fly (2:03.41).
Four Monarchs competed in the 200 fly consolation finals. Sophomore Danielle Nayor (Swinton, England) placed 16th (2:05.37) and sophomore Ashley Luchsinger (Va. Beach, Va.) took 21st (2:07.02) for the women, while freshman Daniel Camozzo (Herndon, Va.) took 18th (1:52.99) and sophomore Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) finishing in 21st place (1:53.84).
Also swimming to an NCAA "B" cut time was junior Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland)in the 200 breast. She posted a time of 2:15.65 to take seventh overall.
Senior Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) swam in the consolations placing 12th in a time of 2:20.73.
Naylor was a finalist in the 1650 free on the final day. She took eighth place with her time of 16:50.39. Her time was the second fastest in the ODU books and was just over a second over the all-time Lady Monarch top time.
Five others swam in the 1650 free consolation finals. Freshman Laura Cempel (Mokena, Ill.) took 11th (17:20.17) and freshman Abby Vance (Raliegh, N.C.) placed 13th (17:23.40) for the women. On the men's side Brame took 12th (15:52.38), freshman Dogus Akay (Izmir, Turkey) placed 21st (16:13.58), and senior Kris Hagg (Skovde, Sweden) finished in 25th (16:16.07).
Sophomore Kimberly Rasleigh (Sydney, Australia) was a finalist in the 200 back and set a new ODU record. She hit the wall tied for third place with the new Lady Monarch top time of 1:59.73. She resets the previous mark of 2:01.19 set by teammate April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) last year.
Barrientos was one of three Monarchs in the consolation finals in the 200 back. Barrientos swam to a 12th place time (2:02.30), while teammate freshman Elizabeth Huggin (Poquoson, Va.) took 21st (2:04.99). Freshman Ryan Telep (Chandler, Ariz.) took 24th (1:55.99) in the consolation finals for the men.
In the 100 free, three Monarchs competed in the consolation finals. Freshman Malin Ekstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) took 11th in a time of 52.00, while junior Emma Forbes (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) took 13th with a final time of 52.28. Freshman Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) swam to 15t in the 100 free with a time of 46.68.
Also making a consolation finals appearance was senior Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.) in the 200 breast. He placed 12th in hitting the wall in a time of 2:05.81.
Both 400 free relay squads took eighth. The women's squad of Ekstrand, Forbes, Haraldsdottir, and Stiles swam to a time of 3:28.07. The men's team of Arnason, Hoxha, junior Ryan Peart (Fort Washington, Pa.), and freshman Andrew Crockett (Toano, Va.) finished in a time of 3:03.66.
The ODU men's and women's swimming and diving teams will return to the water on December 4th against George Washington at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool.
