CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Old Dominion sophomore Maartje van Rijswijk scored with just over two minutes remaining in the game to lift the 12th-ranked Lady Monarchs past No. 8 Michigan, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championships Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Lady Monarchs (13-10) will next take on No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m., with the winner earning a trip to the Final Four.
ODU has now shut out three consecutive opponents, with two of them being nationally-ranked foes. The Lady Monarchs have shutout seven teams this season and have a current streak of 274 minutes without giving up a goal.
First Team All-CAA selection van Rijswijk broke the scoreless tie with 2:09 left in the second half on a reverse-stick shot from the right side of the circle. The goal is her 15th of the season and third game-winner.
Old Dominion held a 3-1 shot advantage in the opening half, but only one shot was on goal. ODU's best threat was thwarted as Michigan goalkeeper Christi Barwick saved a penalty corner blast off the stick of senior Loran Hatch.
Michigan had a 6-3 shot advantage in the second half and had a string of four straight penalty corners, but the Wolverines could not find the back of the cage. ODU junior goalkeeper Devon Seifert had two saves in the win.
The Wolverines' season comes to a close as U-M finishes 2010 with a 15-7 overall record and a Big Ten Tournament Championship.
Old Dominion now owns a 7-4 series advantage on the Wolverines.
In the first game of the day, second-seeded UNC defeated Stanford, 3-1. Old Dominion and UNC have meet twice already this season with the Tar Heels winning both matchups.
