NORFOLK, Va. - The 19th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team overcame a three-goal deficit to force overtime, but Duke's Mary Nielsen scored less than a minute into the extra stanza to give the 16th-ranked Blue Devils a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

Old Dominion, which topped Duke 2-1 earlier this season in Durham, falls to 7-9 on the year. Duke improves to 8-8 overall.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime, but saw their advantage disappear down the stretch as Old Dominion responded with three second half goals to tie the contest.

ODU started to claw its way back into the game when Kathryn Kirk tallied her second goal of the season off a feed from Julie Hodge. Kirk's shot from 10 feet out in the 49th minute sparked the Lady Monarchs' offensive attack.

Sophomore Maartje van Rijswijk cut the Duke lead to a single goal nine minutes later as she weaved through defenders and blasted a high shot from just inside the circle to the back of the cage.

Old Dominion was then able to force overtime after Sami Richardson deflected a beautiful pass from van Rijswijk past the Duke goalkeeper at the 65:18 mark.

Although ODU had all the momentum entering the extra period, Duke struck quickly to earn the win. Blue Devil freshman Emmie Le Marchand intercepted a pass in the ODU end and went one-on-one with Lady Monarch goalkeeper Devon Seifert. Although her shot was deflected, Nielsen was there for the rebound, scoring on a low-angle shot to secure the win 42 seconds into the overtime period.

Old Dominion led Duke in both shots (16-12) and penalty corners (9-6).

The Lady Monarchs will continue their homestand Friday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. ODU returns to CAA play to take on VCU at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
