NORFOLK, Va. - The 12th-ranked Old Dominion sailing team began its 2010-11 season this past weekend competing in the Riley Cup, Navy Laser South #1 and the Navy Radial Open. The Monarchs placed two boats in the top-five at the Riley Cup.
St. Mary's won the Riley Cup, which was hosted by ODU, and Georgetown finished second. ODU's second boat garnered third with 89 points, trailing the Hoyas by 14. The Monarchs' first boat finished fifth with 95 points, trailing fourth-place Navy by just three points.
In A-division, junior Jessica Milligan paired up with freshman Scott Hoffman for seven top-five finishes in 10 races. The duo finished fourth overall, just ahead of ODU's first boat, which was guided by sophomore teammates Dillon Paiva and Kaitlyn Harris.
In B-division, the Monarchs' second boat once again just edged the first. ODU's second boat claimed fifth as the freshmen tandem of Brady Stagg and Chloe Constants compiled seven top-five finishes. Junior Miles Martschink and freshman Jill Fattibene led Old Dominion to a sixth-place result with a win in the eighth race and six top-five results.
At the Laser South #1 sophomore Collin Leon led three ODU sailors in the 16-person field with a seventh-place finish. Teammate Gavin Rudolph ended in eighth and Zach Runci finished 11th.
At the Navy Radial Open Old Dominion sent three Lady Monarchs to compete in the 18-person field. Senior Morgan Wilson was ODU's top sailor with 69 points and an eighth-place result. Freshman Katie Cummings finished 13th and classmate Rachel Austin claimed 16th.
ODU will be back in action next weekend competing at the Nevins Trophy Regatta and the Edward Teach Memorial Regatta. Both events run September 18-19 throughout each day.
