ODU Beats Hofstra, 9-4 To Sweep Season Ending Series

HEMPSTEAD, NY- Old Dominion (24-30/11-13) closed out the season with a 9-4 CAA victory over Hofstra Sunday afternoon to sweep the series. Sophomore Righthander Ben Tomchick (Virginia Beach, vA.) picked up his fourth win of the season and the Monarchs pounded out 16 hits on the day.

With the win, the Monarchs tied for fifth in the CAA with Towson and George Mason.All three teams are 11-13 in league play.

In the second, Hofstra took the early lead as Kevin Flynn's RBI groundout plated Ethan Paquette.

ODU rallied in the third, as Chris Baker (Chesapeake, Va.) singled home Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, VA.) and Chris Buss (Rosemount, MN.) followed with a three-run homer with McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Baker aboard to give ODU a 4-1 lead. It was Buss's third homer of the series and also extended Baker's hitting streak to 28.

In the fifth Nate Hartman (Orlando, FL. ) doubled home John Malbon (Virginia Beach, Va.) with two outs for a 5-2 ODU lead.

In the ODU eighth McAloose singled home Edgar Hernandez and Corsner. Baker followedwith a single to score to score Josh Wright for an 8-2 lead. In the ninth, Donnie Corsner singled home Kenny Stoneback.

The Pride scored in the third as Matt Prokopowicz doubled home Jared Hammer.

In the eighth Ethan Paquette singled home Prokopowicz and Walraven. That cut the ODU lead to 8-4.

Donnie Corsner, Chris Baker and John Malbon each had three hits on the day for ODU. Tomchick fanned five and walked only one in 7.1 innings of work. Seniors Cory Toth and Austin Wright pitched the final inning-plus with shutout ball.

In addition to his 28-game hitting streak, Baker finished with a .369 batting average with a team best 51 RBI along with 8 homers. Jake McAloose finished the season with a .328 batting average, a teambest nine homers with 34 RBI. John Malbon finshed third in hitting at .321 and Donnie Corsner finished at .311 with a team best 54 runs scored and led the CAA with 48 walks. Chris Buss hit .305 with a team best 22 doubles which ranks fourth in the CAA and Kenny Stoneback hit .304.
