HEMPSTEAD, NY--ODU senior shortstop Chris Buss (Rosemount, MN.) knocked in nine runs, including two grand slams to lead the Monarchs (22-30/9-13) to a 14-10 CAA win at Hofstra (20-26-1/10-12) Friday afternoon.
Buss is the first Monarch to ever hit two slams in the same game. He also tied the school mark with six hits in six at bats, sharing the record with Shawn Pearson who did it on March 20, 1988 against The University of Hartford. Buss fell one RBI short of the ODU mark of ten in a game set on May 11, 1994 by ODU Hall of Famer and All-American Matt Quatraro at C.W.Post.
Buss had two homers, two singles and two doubles on the day.
The game was tied 10-10 in the ninth with one out and the bases loaded for the Monarchs. Buss hit his second grand slam of the day with Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, VA.), Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Chris Baker (Chesapeake, VA.) aboard to put the Monarchs up for good at 14-10.
ODU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first on a grand slam homer by Chris Buss with Donnie Corsner, Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico), and Jake McAloose aboard.
In the bottom of the first with two outs Hofstra comes right back with four runs highlighted by a two-run single by Elliot Hagburg. Hofstra took a 7-4 lead in the second and an RBI single by Mike Walraven and a two-run hit by Scott A'Hara. In the third, Matt Ford singled home Jared Hamer to make it 8-4.
In the ODU fifth Jake McAloose scored on a single by John Malbon (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Chris Baker came home on an sacrifice fly RBI by Nate Hartman (Orlando, FL.). ODU re-took the lead in the sixth with three runs on RBI single by Chris Buss and a two-run single by Josh Wright, all with two outs. ODU added a run in the eighth as Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) doubled home Chris Buss.
Hofstra rallied to tie the game in the eighth on a John Kenny RBI single which plated Mike Walraven, followed by a two run RBI game tying single by Kevin Flynn.
Besides Buss, fellow senior John Malbon, junior Donnie Corsner and sophomore Josh Wright each had three hits on the day, while McAloose and Chris Baker had two hits. Baker's hitting streak is now at 26 which is currently the fifth longest streak in the nation with Garrett Wittels of Florida International leading the nation with a 47-game streak.
>Junior righthander Adam Wisniewski (Norfolk, Va.) picked up the win in relief. Kevin Flynn led Hofstra with three hits, while Matt Ford, Mike Walraven, Ethan Paquette each had two. Game two of the series is Saturday at 2 p.m.
