NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion's (13-17/2-2) junior lefthander Kyle Hald (Springfield, Va.) scattered five hits and fanned eight to lead the Monarchs to a 6-1 Colonial Athletic Association win over James Madison (13-12/4-3) Friday night.
Hald leads the CAA in complete games with three and strikeouts with 56 and lowered his ERA to 2.30which second best in the league. Hald is now 5-2 on the season.
Hald and JMU's Kyle Hoffman battled for five-plus scoreless innings until the Monarchs scoredin the bottom of the sixth on a Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, Va.) solo homer with one out.
ODU added three more in the seventh with the help of four walks. Pinch Hitter John Malbon (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled in Chris Baker (Chesapeake, Va.), Edgar Hernandez walked with the bases loadedto plate pinch runner Brandon Shelton and Chris Buss walked to force home Corsner.
In the eighth inning, ODU scored two more as Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) slammed a leadoff homer and Donnie Corsner's sacrifice fly scored Chris Baker. Corsner led ODU with two RBI on the evening.
JMU broke up the shutout in the ninth when McKinnon Langston's sacrifice fly scored Matt Townsend.Hoffman fanned nine batters and walked six for JMU.
Game two of the series will be Saturday at 4 p.m.
