Norfolk, VA -- The Monarchs where excited to be in full pads for the first time since their final game of last season against Virginia Military Institute. The Monarchs won that game with strong defense, 42-35 at Foster Stadium in Lexington, Virginia.

The team had the opportunity in two different segments of team drills to go full on contact. "This is why we love to play the game, it's why we love to coach," stated Head Coach Bobby Wilder.

The coaching staff's main focus will be on special teams. Where they aim to improve significantly from last season in respects to the return game and kick coverage.

The defensive unit looked very impressive today, forcing a couple of turnovers and managing several pass deflections. Coach Wilder expressed his enthusiasm over an improved defensive front with several returning starters and the addition of junior, DT Ronnie Cameron from Westbury, N.Y. and sophomore, DL Dominik Davenport from Hampton, V.A.

On the offensive side of the ball the Coach Wilder complemented the play of the six running backs, each making their own individual improvements throughout the off season and the addition of freshman, Angus Harper from Alexandria, V.A.

With the first full contact practice of the spring in the books, Coach Wilder expects to see improvement over next 10 spring practices before the spring game on April 24, 2010.Monarch Moments:During 11 on 11 competitions, freshman cornerback, Donald Smith from Chesapeake, V.A. made a huge hit causing an incomplete pass that would have otherwise been a 30 yard gain for the offense.

Cornerback Markell Wilkins also had an interception.
