MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Old Dominion sailing team won seven races to claim sixth at the Bob Bavier Team Race Intersectional at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center. The College of Charleston won the event, winning 20 total races and five straight in the final round.
Each of the 10 teams in the competition completed a double round-robin, with the top six scores advancing to the final round-robin. In total 105 races were sailed.Georgetown went 19-4 to finish second, while Navy was third with a 13-10 mark.
The Monarchs went 4-5 in the first round of competition and then posted a 3-6 mark in the second. The seven wins were enough to push ODU into the final round-robin. The Monarchs edged Clemson, Eckerd, Stanford and URI for the final spot.
ODU competed against Charleston, Georgetown, Navy, Roger Williams and St. Mary's in the final six. The Monarchs went 0-5 in the last round to finish the competition in sixth.
Serving as skippers for the Monarchs sailing team were Alan Alkins, Stephanie Roble and Zack Kelchner. Crew members were Arielle Darrow, Jessica Milligan, Emily Reich and Michael Komar.
Old Dominion will next compete March 6-7 at the Graham Hall Team Race in Annapolis, Md. and the ODU Open/South #1. The Lady Monarchs will also compete in the Charleston Women's Intersectional at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center.
