NORFOLK, Va. -- Through 26 events, the Old Dominion men's swimming and diving squad is ahead of conference rival William & Mary, while the women's team is ahead of Northeastern and trails James Madison and the Tribe, in Day One action of this weekend's pod meet.
The Monarchs enter Sunday's competition with ahead of William & Mary, 130-108. Meanwhile, the Lady Monarchs hold a 135-106 advantage over Northeastern and trail James Madison, 141-100, and William & Mary, 129-110.
David Scorupa (Richmond, Va.) gave the Monarchs their first event victory of the meet scoring a 307.25 on the 3 meter board.
Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) also gave the Monarchs another victory in the 50 free. ODU's NCAA qualifier last year, hit the wall in a time of 21.27 for the win. Later in the meet, Arnason claimed first in the 100 breast clocking in at a time of 55.68.
Also, earning a victory on day one action was the 200 medley relay squad. Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), Arnason, Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.), and Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.) logged a time of 1:34.72.
Johan Lundberg gave the ODU men its fourth victory of the pod meet with his finish in the 100 fly. Lundberg claimed first, racing to a time of 52.77.
Also recording top finishes were Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) and Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.). Ramkvist captured the 100 back sporting a time of 51.85 in the event, while Latimer swam his way to a first place time of 4:09.03 in the 400 IM.
The 400 medley relay team of Mikael Ramkvist, Arnason, Sean Frye, and Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) rounded out men's action on Saturday. The group took first place posting a top time of 3:26.85 for the Monarchs' eighth top finish of the day.
On the women's side, the Lady Monarchs had a six event wins on day one.
Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) had a pair of victories. She, swam her way to a time of 2:06.72 in the 200 IM for a first place finish and another top time in the 100 fly with a time of 1:05.36.
The 200 yard medley team, consisting of April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), Haraldsdottir, Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland), and Carrie Goodman (Glen Allen, Va.), also brought home a top finish. The group took first place with their time of 1:46.57.
Two members of the 200 yard medley team also picked up individual victories later in the meet. Nowak later won the 100 fly. The ODU record holder in the event gave the Lady Monarchs another victory by outpacing her fellow swimmers with a finish time of 57.57. Barrientos went on to claim the top spot in the 100 back registering a time of 56.93.
Rounding out the Lady Monarch wins on Saturday was the 400 medley relay squad. The team of Barrientos, Haraldsdottir, Nowak, and Elizaveta Moiseeva (Moscow, Russia) edged out the rest of the competition with a final time of 3:54.09.
Action continues on Sunday with the 500 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free200 Breast, 200 Fly, and 400 Free Relay.
