NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore Rachel Stream (Poolesville, Md.) netted her fifth goal of the season, but the No. 20 Old Dominion field hockey team fell, 3-1, to Atlantic Coast Conference rival Duke Sunday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

Old Dominion, which beat Duke in Durham on September 20, falls to 6-10 on the year. The Blue Devils have now beaten back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association foes to improve to 7-6.

Duke controlled play for much of the first half, outshooting Old Dominion 8-1 and garnering the opening stanzas only three penalty corners. Consecutive goals from Lauren Miller and Susan Ferger, coming in a three minute span, gave the Blue Devils a two-goal halftime advantage.

Miller's tally came off Dukes first penalty corner as she blasted a shot from just inside the circle into the right side of the cage. Ferger took advantage of an ODU turnover as she received a pass from Chelsea Amsley and scored to give the Blue Devils a two-goal edge at intermission.

Duke opened the second half with another goal to go up 3-0 in the 36th minute. Amie Survilla led a Blue Devils fast-break and she and teammate Megan Deakins made consecutive passes to each other which opened the cage for Survilla, who scored her 20th goal of the season.

The Lady Monarchs would get back into the game in the 44th minute, taking advantage of their first penalty corner of the game. Senior Alyschia Conn (Peach Bottom, Pa.) received a pass from classmate Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.), who left it for a Stream blast.

Lady Monarch goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.), who made a game-high seven saves, and the Old Dominion defense would hold Duke scoreless over the final 34 minutes, but ODU could get no closer than two goals the rest of the way.

Old Dominion will resume conference play next weekend with a pair of critical matchups against VCU and James Madison.
